Finland distances itself from its inadequate neighbor

The project, which was approved in Finland last year, has begun to be implemented. A wall for 145 million euros will be built on the border with the Russian Federation.

In the last days of February, the construction of a wall began on a three-kilometer section of the Finnish-Russian border. The initiator and customer of the works is Finland. The project is divided into two parts:

  1. Construction of a pilot section for testing.
  2. Construction of the main part.

Test section

First of all, a 3 km-long experimental section will be built. For this, 6 million euros have been allocated from the budget. The purpose of such a test is to check how the structure can withstand the following loads:

  • minus temperatures;
  • a snow cover;
  • an onslaught of people.

At this stage, the area of Imatra point is being cleared of trees and the earthworks are conducted. The pilot version is planned to be finished by the end of June. So the full testing can begin before the cold season of 2023-2024.

Enemy will not pass

The main works will last three to four years. According to the project, the wall will stretch for 10-20% of the Russian-Finnish border, which is approximately 1300-2000 km. 139 million euros will be allocated for this.

It is estimated that the service life of the wall will be at least 50 years.

What will the wall look like?

The fence will not be significantly different from similar ones on other borders. The constituent parts will be:

  • a concrete base with a height of several meters;
  • a barbed wire above the level of the concrete slab;
  • security cameras around the entire perimeter;
  • lighting and speakers in certain areas.

The goal of the project is to complicate the unwanted crossing of the border by Russia.
