There can be no insults or personal scores in politics, especially when you ask for help for your country during a war. That is why Zelenskyy had a telephone conversation with Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of Congress. Previously he expressed a compromising opinion that the USA should not provide Ukraine with an “unlimited check”.
Is free support closing?
The author of this statement – Kevin McCarthy – became the Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2023. He had not yet held this post when he said that in principle he supports all kinds of assistance to the Ukrainian government to resist Russian aggression, but with a nuance: accountability must be introduced.
McCarthy did not openly criticize the redirection of aid and stressed that Congress and the Senate could discuss the problem and work out a mechanism. Actions like this will ensure that aid goes to where the resources are really needed now.
Such rhetoric was in November last year.
Now everything is different
After his appointment, McCarthy never returned to this subject. The other day, Zelenskyy had a phone conversation with him, during which he thanked the American government for its support. However, Kyiv still made some conclusions, because the President of Ukraine assured ahead of time that the Ukrainian side could provide reporting on the use of every dollar.
