Representatives of the Republican Party (RP) in the US Congress sent a special letter to the current US President Joseph Biden, in which they called for an end to Washington’s supply of lethal weapons to Kyiv. The document states that due to such injections, the United States economy suffers “significant losses.” Will the addressees of the message be able to get a clear answer from Biden?
At first glance, no. The fact is that the corresponding appeal was signed by only 19 congressmen, who do not represent an absolute majority in the legislature of the United States of America. In addition, in the highest echelons of Poland itself, there is still no consensus on the future of military agreements with Ukraine. But the fact remains: certain political forces in the United States intend to put an end to these contacts between Washington and Kyiv.
And it’s not even about geopolitics. Since the beginning of 2022, America has already provided Ukraine with $113 billion in military aid, according to a number of American Republicans, money that the Washington authorities have not allocated to any of their own military campaigns, including Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. “Today, we are the largest donor for Kyiv, while such contributions from our NATO allies pale in comparison to American contributions,” the letter says, in particular. And then its authors summarize literally the following: “Ukraine spends our reserves, which often take years to replenish, in a matter of months. We must take care of our own security and increase our arsenals.
But in this congressmen are right in their own way. It’s no secret that official Washington has recently been seriously considering the possibility of strengthening its influence in the Asia-Pacific region and does not rule out military support for Taiwan in its likely confrontation with mainland China. Among other things, today the United States must implement the so-called “containment policy” against Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic, which will also require additional money.
“Against this background, it is clearly not necessary to talk about full-scale sponsorship of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the side of the United States of America exclusively,” American analyst William Connolly noted in a special commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. “The letter being discussed by Congressman Biden is that kind of “stop valve” that may well slow down this process.”
However, Joseph Biden’s reaction to the mentioned appeal has not yet followed. And, as expected, it won’t. Earlier, the head of the American state said that his country does not intend to abandon “various partnership programs with Kiev.” Thus, the United States will continue to authorize the supply of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with Abrahams tanks, Javelin systems, and even relatively modern Patriot systems.
According to independent experts, the situation can change only after the next presidential election in the United States, scheduled for 2024.
