Iceland was the first in Europe to stop completely diplomatic cooperation with the Russian Federation

The diplomatic relations between Russia and the Western world continue to break down mercilessly. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland has officially declared the complete suspension of embassy work on the territory of Russia. Starting August 1, 2023, the Moscow representative office will not function.

Difficult decision

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland followed standard protocol and summoned the diplomatic representative from Russia to notify this official decision. Additionally, he will announce the demand for the closure of the Russian representative office in Reykjavik.

Making a decision in this matter isn’t simple, as the diplomatic relations between these two countries go back almost 80 years to when Iceland gained independence after World War II.

This is not the end

The embassy’s closure until the end of July has resulted in an increased workload, because everyone who wanted to resolve some issues in the near future must do it within a month.

The minister emphasized that the suspension of diplomatic activities should not be viewed as a permanent end to relations. Instead, it is a temporary pause that will end at the earliest favorable opportunity.

Read between the lines

Although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland did not say this directly, politicians could read the message hidden in the statement. It means that the diplomatic process will resume its ordinary course once there are changes in the Kremlin’s leadership and the country will develop in a new direction.
