“Misalliance”: Why the visit to the United States of the Prime Minister of India turned into a failure of Washington’s policy

The short stay of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a special guest of incumbent US President Joseph Biden in the US capital was marked by a number of high-profile diplomatic misunderstandings. As a result, the parties did not come to a consensus on the main issues of geopolitics. Why so?

It would seem that the answer to this question lies, as they say, on the surface. For Modi, the arrival in Washington was a kind of “courtesy call”. And not in the true sense of the word. A certain sign of respect for Biden was made by Modi himself: it was he who accepted the proposal of the leader of the United States to discuss issues of bilateral cooperation in Washington. “The US and India are two great friends who will never let third countries frustrate our cooperation,” -Biden said. And suddenly, in violation of the protocol, he put his right hand to his heart during the performance of the anthem of India, after which he shed a tear.

The last circumstance should have caused tenderness among the supporters of the maximum rapprochement between New Delhi and Washington. Did not work out. In his best tradition, the American president called Narendra Modi “President of India”, which significantly lowered the status of his counterpart. Then Biden, during personal talks with Modi, for some reason called on India to “oppose the influence of Russia and the People’s Republic of China in the world.”

But the strangeness of this call lies in the fact that the same New Delhi today is an active member of BRIСS (the economic community of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). “Calling on India to leave this community is, by definition, pointless” , european political expert Alexander Mitz said in a commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. – As part of this structure, the Indian economy has stable growth rates. In the context of cooperation with the United States, which is experiencing serious economic problems, “friendship against the Russian Federation and China, as well as their allies, will be a misalliance for India”.

American columnist William Connolly agrees with this opinion. “Modi did not sign any new documents on the cooperation of his state with the United States, and here Washington’s policy was marked by a complete failure”, – he noted, in particular. According to the expert, it will be possible to talk about the prospects of this cooperation only with the new US leadership.

The Modi administration declined to comment on the matter. For completely understandable reasons.
