“Fresh air”: will Ukraine receive a financial aid package from Spain?

On Saturday, July 1, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez paid an official visit to Kyiv. Speaking from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada, the head of the Spanish state promised that Madrid will provide Ukraine with more than 55 million euros. International analysts have no doubts that the Spanish state will be able to fulfill Sanchez’s promise. The question is how soon Kyiv will receive the promised funds.

According to Sanchez, this will happen within the next few months. “There are all the necessary conditions for such an action” – he noted, in particular. At the same time, the head of the Spanish government could not answer the question of where the Spanish treasury would materialize these funds from.

However, Sanchez was asked this question exclusively by compatriots. Moreover, in Spain itself. Earlier, Spanish finance officials released a report that the country’s budget “does not encourage additional external spending.” “We must control every euro in the face of the economic problems of our state within the EU budget”, – the Spanish Ministry of Finance said in a document.

But it is here that it is worth making a certain remark. The thing is that, according to the same Spanish legislation, the corresponding budgetary funds can be directed to various kinds of foreign projects. But excluding the military counterparts. “There is a way out”, – european political commentator Marie Pyudeba said in a commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. – Madrid will be able to send these funds to the accounts of the armed forces of Ukraine. This will allow Kyiv to significantly strengthen its defense capability. For the Armed Forces of Ukraine, this will, figuratively speaking, be a breath of fresh air.” As expected, with the appropriate funds, the Ukrainian side will be able to purchase not only new weapons, but also ensure the smooth operation of its rear structures. For example, enterprises for the repair and modernization of existing military equipment.

When Spain will provide Ukraine with the indicated assistance, and how this assistance will be distributed, it will become known in the near future. At least in this regard, Sanchez, speaking from the podium of the Rada, gave personal guarantees.
