Hungary as a probable partner of Ukraine: the Hungarian President goes to see Zelenskyy

Hungary’s position on Ukraine may change. It is known that this country does not provide military aid to Kyiv, representatives of the Hungarian government periodically visit the Kremlin, and in addition, brisk trade with Russia continues. However, some experts believe that the announced arrival can change the situation.

Who is on top?

The President of Hungary, Katalin Novak, was elected in the spring of 2022, and became a record holder in two points at once:

– the first female president of this country;

– the youngest person to hold this position in the entire history of Hungary.

In fact, in all the news about the relations between Ukraine and Hungary, the name of the prime minister of the country Orban is always heard. He often speaks harshly and scandalously about Ukraine. Many Ukrainians do not even know that the President of Hungary is a woman, not Viktor Orban.

Obverse and reverse

From the very beginning of her term, Katalin Novak condemned attempts to restore the USSR and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Moreover, she actively supports Ukraine’s future accession to the European Union. It would seem that the head of the country is on the side of Kyiv, so why are there so many unpleasant moments?

Novak came to the presidency after being the vice-chairman of the Fidesz party for 4 years. Viktor Orban has been the leader of this party for 23 years.

The party’s official ideology is based on the following things:

– Euroscepticism;

– Hungarian nationalism;

– Russophilism.

The Fidesz party is one of the largest and most influential in Hungary. Having two leaders of the country who came from there is a guarantee of unity in politics. And for the balance of power and to reassure the electorate, one of these persons can periodically announce what foreign partners and Hungarians who are dissatisfied with the current course of government expect.

A decisive meeting

Some analysts have high expectations for the future visit of the President of Hungary to Kyiv. This should happen in August.

However, it is worth remembering that the first meeting between Zelenskyy and Novak took place in November last year, and no significant changes took place after that.

This time, the reason is the participation in the Crimea Platform. This will be the next meeting in this format. The last one was held as an online summit in 2022, and now it is planned to gather many high-ranking officials from different countries in Kyiv.

As a rule, personal meetings are much more effective, so we can really hope for some positive changes.
