War and peace: what Saudi Arabia will offer at large-scale negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine

Searching for a base for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine is a more important process than it might seem at first glance. Many countries have attempted to play the role of mediator, and now Saudi Arabia is seeking to take on this responsibility. A peace summit is scheduled to take place there by the end of the year. Will these plans come true?

All over the world

Preparation is going on seriously. Representatives from 30 countries were invited to the meeting, including Brazil, India, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, Mexico, Chile, Zambia, and South Africa. It is believed that, in essence, this event will be a logical continuation of the June meeting held in Copenhagen.

The following influential members have already confirmed their participation:

– the United Kingdom;

– South Africa;

– Poland;

– the EU.

It has been announced that the US President’s national security advisor Jake Sullivan will be in attendance.

Without the culprit of the celebration

It is interesting that despite the main theme of the event – ending the war in Ukraine – representatives of Russia were not invited to it. This suggests that there isn’t a desire to conduct a dialogue with Russia as it is viewed as a passive party. Russian diplomatic representatives have taken notice of this.

The negotiations will be held in the port city of Jeddah on the shores of the Red Sea, which is considered the economic capital of Saudi Arabia.

Almost everything is solved

The primary purpose of the meeting is to prepare for the peace summit, which is expected to take place by the end of the year. The summit will declare the main common principles for ending the war while strengthening the official position of Kyiv in peace negotiations with the Kremlin.

The meeting also aims to include the Global South in the discussion. Russia has been successful in winning the information war and propaganda in these regions, which is why they haven’t participated in such meetings before.

Despite the resistance

Another goal of the event is to involve China. Its representatives did not arrive in Copenhagen, but it is expected that they will come to Saudi Arabia, as a friendlier country.
