Russia continues to impose on neighboring countries a course of development that it considers the only acceptable one. This once again became clear from the statement of Dmitry Medvedev, who threatened to annex South Ossetia and Abkhazia in the case of Georgia’s rapprochement with the West. He did not explain why the Russian Federation has the right to decide the ways of development of other countries.
A paranoid country
In his interview for the publication «Arguments and Facts», the official said that Ukraine and Georgia were used by the West as rams against Russia. The rams that never hit, but are now destroying by the Kremlin is a strange description of the situation, but for Medvedev, everything is logical.
According to him, Russia has concerns about Georgia’s rapprochement with the West, and if this concern becomes real, the Russian Federation will again act according to the 2008 scenario. This statement caused a storm of emotions in the world because the behavior of a government that is guided by its own concern and tries to somehow reduce it by attacking others resembles the behavior of an aggressive paranoid.
Who overcomes whom?
The Kremlin is sure that the occupation of these two regions would be a complete defeat for the West. Moreover, it is difficult to argue with this, because it would also be a defeat for democracy and law on the continent and in the world in general. Although Moscow considers this exclusively from the point of view of the loss of European influence on South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Medvedev considers talks about Georgia joining NATO as a direct threat to Russia’s security, and the only answer to this joining can be a military scenario. The Kremlin calls premeditated the Russophobic moods that are intensifying in Georgia.
Are you serious?
Some political analysts point out that this statement should not be taken too seriously, because it was not official, but only in the format of an interview. However, can the words of a person who holds the post of Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia be considered empty sound?
It is unlikely that it is not coordinated with the general course of the Kremlin. If we take into account that military intervention on the territory of Georgia at the initiative of Moscow has already taken place more than once, then it is simply irrational to remain too optimistic about such statements.
