The UN is preparing for a humanitarian crisis in winter

Last year, Ukrainian infrastructure became the principal target for Russian bombings. It is already known that the Russian Federation will renew its shelling tactics next season. Civilians suffer the most from this. That is why the UN is already preparing for winter support for Ukrainians for the 2023-2024 heating season.

They do not cope

About 16 million Ukrainians received material support last season. The new support package will be slightly different from the previous year. Now, the number of those who need help is 18 million. The figure is enormous; it is almost half of those who are territorially located in Ukraine.

The spokesperson of the UN Office Saviano Abreu said that country’s humanitarian problems in the country existed even before. They intensified after 2014 when the war broke out in the East, and starting from February 2022, it turned into a real catastrophe. This is because the country’s economy has been stable since 2014, which allowed it to provide significant social support to its citizens. Over the past year and a half, this opportunity has been melting away every month.

How can they help?

The UN is well aware that the situation will worsen significantly if winter shelling is carried out on infrastructure facilities. This will lead to an increase in the urgent needs of Ukrainians.

The spokesperson of the UN Office noted that the situation does not allow to help all those who need it, so it is planned to cover about 11 million people with support.

The help will be as follows:

– partial housing payment for IDPs;

– provision of funds and resources for the restoration of housing in the frontline areas;

– support of communal services;

– providing people with food, clothing, medicine and fuel;

– provision of fodder for livestock.

This will not solve the problem completely, but it will make the winter easier for many Ukrainians and enable some people to live until the warmth in the literal sense of the word.
