Already in 2024-th Ukraine and the United States will begin to implement a large-scale program in the production of modern weapons. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced this the day before after a meeting with his American counterpart Joseph Biden. According to him, we are talking about an “epoch-making agreement” that can bring the two countries as close as possible and ultimately lead Kyiv to victory in its confrontation with the Russian Federation. Even Western experts, always cautious in their comments, this time abstracted themselves from skeptical remarks. What, in essence, happened?
There is no clear answer to this question. At least for now. President Zelensky himself literally stated the following in this context: “We met with Biden and his team. We have come to a new long-term perspective – we will work together and produce the weapons we need. We will create new jobs for our peoples.” And, as if by the way, he added that Ukrainian-American joint ventures plan to produce the widest range of products, including modern air defense systems.
No more, no less. Moreover, for some reason, neither the Ukrainian side nor the American authorities refused to clarify where the money for this project would come from and which companies would be involved in it. It is curious that earlier in the US Congress, voices increasingly began to be heard in favor of Washington stopping the supply of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. But, according to American law, it is congressmen who must decide the fate of a project of this scale.
So to speak, Biden also added fuel of mystery to the fire of intrigue. In his best traditions, he emphasized that the Ukrainian-American arms production alliance “will be a new successful endeavor that will show the power of the United States and its allies.” In this particular case, by the word “allies” the owner of the White House meant Ukraine.
Analysts also agree with this opinion. “It looks like there is a breakthrough for Ukraine, which will mark the end of the tunnel in which Kiev has been in the darkness since the Russian invasion,” said American commentator William Connolly in a commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. “Of course, the United States will take on the main responsibility in this case as well.” financial and production burden, but for the same Biden administration this will be a big plus: America will continue to support Ukraine, but will limit cash injections to the activities of the new weapons association.”
Time will tell how effective the new idea of Kyiv and Washington will be.
