Worse than it seems: why a transport blockade could hurt Ukraine more than a war?

The solution to the problem that arose with the transport blocking on the border with Poland must be lightning fast. The situation occurred at the beginning of November, and every day can be considered a criminal delay because it will not be resolved by itself. Why is it so important? And what prevents reaching a mutually beneficial solution in this matter?

The essence of the blockade

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, the rules of international transportation by the countries of the European Union were eased for the latter. This was done to facilitate and speed up the delivery of humanitarian goods, military aid, etc.

However, this has created a lot of competition for other carriers from the EU. For a long time, they waited for the situation to change, but measures were not taken against the background of which their losses continued to grow. Therefore, blocking the border has become a decisive call for the return of permits to cross the border for Ukrainian carriers, which is simply impossible to ignore.

Double danger

Although everything looks logical and natural from the outside, we must remember the main results of the situation:

– A blow to the economy. After the river and sea routes for grain export from Ukraine were blocked because of Russian aggression, the overland land corridor remained the last way. Grain export is the main budget-filling factor, so the Ukrainian authorities cannot allow a blow in this direction.

– Fuel for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Truck delays at the border caused the country’s fuel shortage, which in a few days was reflected in gas station prices. However, the main negative consequence is not this but the fact that the lack of fuel is felt in the army. Due to the attacks by the Russians, which have increased significantly in recent weeks, this can play a fatal role.

These two negative consequences are the main ones, but they are far from the only ones.

Political “reanimation”

Due to the reasons mentioned above, the actions of Polish carriers and certain inaction of the Ukrainian authorities raise questions. However, it is impossible to say that stabilizing measures were not applied at all during November. To solve the problem, they resorted to the following:

– develop the issue of separate lanes for empty traffic to relieve the main roads;

– decided to restore the operation of the eCherha electronic system.

Although this made it possible to reduce the waiting time in traffic jams, it did not solve the main problem. Therefore, it was the turn of politics and diplomacy.
