Macron is losing weight: why the French parliament “revolted”

The French National Assembly by a majority vote rejected the bill “On Migration” initiated by the country’s President Emmanuel Macron. According to some reports, parliamentarians pointedly refused to follow all the presidential recommendations and actually sent the document for revision. This dealt another, this time crushing, blow to the reputation and position of the head of state.

The “coup” in parliament shook the entire political system of France and clearly demonstrated that the country could become ungovernable for Macron,” says an editorial in the influential American publication Politico. They say this is now especially felt against the backdrop of the loss of pro-presidential forces in the past parliamentary elections .

And the day before, the famous French political scientist Cloe Morin said literally the following: “This may mean that we are entering the last phase of Macron’s rule. He has run out of strength, and he is no longer able to control the situation in the National Assembly.”

What was contained in the text of the ill-fated bill? First of all, the document provided for facilitating the procedure for the expulsion of foreigners who had committed crimes on French territory, and also determined ways to legalize migrants of specific working professions. The president personally supervised the development of its main paragraphs. At the same time, the government counted not only on the support of conservatives in parliament, but also assumed that the far left and far right forces would refuse to unite against Macron. Everything turned out exactly the opposite.

Apparently, the fate of the bill was already predetermined from the moment the president took up it. In parliament, the head of state does not enjoy even the slightest authority.

Let us recall that at one time French leaders Charles de Gaulle and Francois Mitterrand in such a case preferred to hold early elections. One can only guess what Macron will do in this particular situation.
