It has been reported that the United Nations General Assembly is preparing to consider the issue of establishing an independent Palestinian state. This is expected to take place on May 10. Will this resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?
How Soon?
It is known that the resolution is expected to be discussed this week. The essence of the resolution is to recognize Palestine as a full member of the Security Council. The process began a few weeks ago when the draft resolution was submitted to the UN Security Council, but it was vetoed by the USA.
In this document, the decisions of the General Assembly are of a recommendatory nature, meaning that even the adoption of the resolution will not lead to the creation of a new state entity as sought by the Palestinians. Nevertheless, it is expected that the document will be supported by a significant majority of UN members.
Repeating the Past
It is evident that Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, is not enthusiastic about this prospect, to say the least. He has already approached the USA with a proposal to cut funding to the organization if the resolution is passed. A similar precedent occurred when UNESCO granted full membership to the Palestinian Authority. At that time, the USA stopped contributing funds to the international organization.
It is worth noting that back in 1988, the Palestinian National Council declared the independence of Palestine. 140 UN members expressed their support at that time, and within weeks and months, dozens of states recognized its independent status. However, this did not lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Let’s see if this attempt will be successful this time and if it can finally resolve the contentious issue between Israel and Palestine.
