The European Commission stated that the issue of airspace defense directly concerns the governments of EU member states. Each EU country decides for itself whether to shoot down Russian missiles. This was stated by the European Commission spokesperson for foreign policy, Peter Stano.
Countries control their own airspace
This is a good question for member states. The European Union does not deal with airspace issues. Member states control their own airspace for such operations. Therefore, we cannot comment on this, said Peter Stano.
The European Commission spokesperson also stated that the EU provides Ukraine with everything it needs to defend against Russian aggression.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said he considered the scenario realistic in which US missile defense systems in Poland could defend the skies over western Ukraine. According to him, this would protect NATO countries from “attacks” by missiles or Russian drones.
Patriot Systems for Ukraine
- Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky said that to fully cover Ukraine, it is desirable to have 25 Patriot systems with 6-8 batteries each.
- The Ukrainian Foreign Minister said that there are currently 100 available Patriot systems in the world. For example, one battery can be stationed to protect a port or airport in neighboring countries. Dmytro Kuleba expressed hope that we will be able to obtain at least 7 additional batteries for the SAM in the near future.
- The European Parliament refused to adopt a decision on financing the EU Council. It was stated that this would continue until Ukraine received the Patriot systems. We are talking about 7 batteries, the need for which was mentioned by Dmytro Kuleba.
