Among the member states of the European Union, the topic of striking Russian territory with Western weapons is being discussed more frequently. This was reported by an EU official on the condition of anonymity.
Discussions in the EU
The EU is increasingly raising the issue of allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons for attacks on Russia. “There are no international legal obstacles to Ukraine striking Russian territory,” said a high-ranking diplomat off the record. This topic may also be discussed by foreign ministers during a meeting of the EU Council in Brussels. The source says that this issue is “coming to the forefront more and more.”
“It is becoming increasingly clear that this would likely help Ukraine in its fight against Russia,” the source says.
What is Known About the Ban
- The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, criticized the White House administration for restricting the use of Western weapons to defend Ukraine and retaliate against Russia.
- Unexpectedly, House Speaker Mike Johnson also supported the idea. He stated that Ukraine should be allowed to wage war against the aggressor country as it sees fit. According to Johnson, Ukrainians “should be able to strike back.”
- Additionally, calls for permission to strike Russia have also come from France. This includes Jean-Louis Bourlanges, head of the French parliament’s foreign affairs committee. He believes that the right to self-defense excludes the right to sanctuary on the aggressor’s territory.
