“The Situation Has Stabilized”: Top U.S. General Explains Why Russian Offensive in Kharkiv Region Has Stalled

Ukrainians have stabilized the situation in the Kharkiv region and are holding the defense after a massive Russian offensive in May. General Charles Brown noted that the Ukrainians effectively built defensive lines, leading to stability in the region. The Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region forces Ukraine to redeploy some of its forces, but the defensive positions are being held quite well.

In May, Russia launched a massive offensive in the Kharkiv region. However, the Ukrainian army managed to withstand the pressure of the superior enemy forces, switch to defense, and even stabilize the front. According to the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown, the situation in the Kharkiv region has stabilized in recent weeks. This happened because the Ukrainian side effectively constructed defensive lines in this region. In May, the Russians launched another offensive on this front in hopes of achieving strategic goals.

The Situation in the Kharkiv Region Has Stabilized

Brown participated in a press conference following the 23rd meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (the “Ramstein” format) in Brussels. The general noted that the Russian offensive in this region diverts the attention and capabilities of Ukrainians in other directions.

“I would say that the situation has somewhat stabilized compared to the last few weeks. And one of the things the Ukrainians have focused on over the last few months, starting from the 24th, is building their defensive lines. They are quite effectively building these defensive lines, which has created some stability,” said Charles Brown.

However, the general emphasized that the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region forces Ukraine to redeploy some forces from other directions, which somewhat stretches the defense.

Brown added that the Ukrainian side is currently holding the defensive positions in the Kharkiv region quite well. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that there is “a slowdown in the Russians’ advance and stabilization on this particular front.” According to him, the Russians currently do not have the strength to “take advantage of a breakthrough.”

What Is Happening on the Fronts in the Kharkiv Region

  • Military expert Pavlo Narozhny told Channel 24 that in May, the Russian command gathered troops on various fronts and threw them into the Kharkiv direction without any hope of advancement. He noted that although the Russians distracted Ukrainian troops, they lost their main forces in Vovchansk.
  • The commander of the “Achilles” strike UAV battalion of the 92nd Mechanized Brigade, Oles Maliarevyc, reported that fighting continues around the clock in the northern Kharkiv region. The situation has stabilized. In recent days, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have conducted strike and assault operations, regained part of the Ukrainian territory, and fortified their positions.
  • The Russians also planned to carry out a provocation in the Sumy region to further stretch our forces. The traitor Ramzan Kadyrov claimed on the evening of June 9 that his fighters had captured the Ukrainian village of Ryzhivka. Almost immediately, the local authorities of the Bilopillya community refuted his lies.
  • The Russians have completely failed their offensive in the Kharkiv region, which began in May. The Main Intelligence Directorate reported that this affected the enemy’s plans and actions on other fronts as well.
