Global Peace Summit in Switzerland

On June 15, a two-day Global Peace Summit initiated by the Chair of the Swiss Federal Council Viola Amherd started in Switzerland. The event is taking place at the Buergenstock resort in central Switzerland and will last until June 16. The main goal of the summit is to start a peaceful process, build an atmosphere of trust, and identify key ideas for further steps towards peace in Ukraine.

The summit has attracted the attention of the global community, bringing together over 100 delegations, including 57 heads of state and governments from around the world. It is noteworthy that Russia was not invited to this event, and the country has repeatedly declined to participate.

The summit program includes plenary sessions and thematic discussions focused on three key aspects of the Ukrainian “peace formula”: nuclear security, food security, and the humanitarian dimension. Participants are given the opportunity to express their vision of a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.

Discussion on the inclusion of Russia

One of the important topics for discussion at the summit will be the question of how and when to include Russia in the peace process. The Swiss government believes that the participation of both sides of the conflict is necessary to achieve a long-term solution. However, there have been some difficulties leading up to the summit: changes were made to the final document on the eve of the meeting that could have undesired consequences for Ukraine, causing several states to decline participation in the event.
