Putin aims to continue the war even after the Peace Summit, and the EU believes that Russia is not ready for peace initiatives. The first Peace Summit in Switzerland was successful for Ukraine, but Putin did not show a willingness to end the war.
Putin Wants to Continue the War
During the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday, ministers will discuss the results of the Peace Summit in Switzerland.
“We believe that the Peace Summit was successful. The main goal of the summit was to show Ukraine that the majority of the international community supports a solution based on international law and the UN Charter, as this will be the only possible basis for lasting peace in Ukraine,” shared a high-ranking diplomat.
According to him, the first Peace Summit is a good way to start a future process that will eventually include Russia. However, there are currently no signs that Putin is ready to stop the war. After Putin’s latest ultimatum regarding the end of the war, the EU stated that Russia will continue its attacks.
“Putin wants to continue the war and is preparing for it,” said an EU official.
It was also recently reported that Ukraine and the EU may sign a security guarantees agreement by the end of June. This decision will be discussed by politicians during the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday, June 24.
