Ukraine’s energy system is 70% destroyed, Josep Borrell called on the EU to help with restoration. The European Union expressed support for Ukraine and emphasized the need to avoid the total collapse of the power grid. Borrell condemned the Hungarian Prime Minister’s visit to Russia and rejected claims about pushing towards war, reaffirming the EU’s support for Ukraine.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, stated that 70% of Ukraine’s energy system is currently destroyed. He will appeal to EU member states to help repair the country’s power grid. He made this statement ahead of the EU Council meeting in Brussels.
Borrell on Ukraine’s energy system
Josep Borrell said that the European Union must help prevent the complete destruction of Ukraine’s power system.
“Now it’s summer, but in winter it will be much harder to endure. Therefore, I will call on EU member states to provide more support for the restoration and replacement of the power grid with more powerful energy generation,” he said.
Another issue that ministers will be working on is strengthening air defense. Josep Borrell said that immediately after Orban’s visit, Russian missiles struck the children’s hospital “Okhmatdyt” in Kyiv. The EU’s chief diplomat condemned the Hungarian Prime Minister’s visit and responded to the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto’s statements that the EU is allegedly pushing Ukraine towards war. Borrell noted that the European Union supports Ukraine and wants to end the war based on the UN Charter.
“We will discuss how member states assess the position of a country that simultaneously holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. The European Union is not pushing for war. It is not on the side of war. It is on Ukraine’s side, defending it in the face of aggression,” said the EU’s chief diplomat.
