The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has announced the successful connection of one of the nuclear power units to the energy system, which was previously undergoing planned maintenance. The maintenance was completed ahead of schedule, significantly impacting the stability of the energy system and reducing the electricity deficit.
On Wednesday, July 24, power supply restrictions are planned in the western and partially southern regions of Ukraine from 6:00 PM to midnight, while in all other regions they will be in effect from midnight to midnight.
Scope of Repairs
This year repairs are being carried out on eight energy units of Rivne, South Ukrainian, and Khmelnitsky nuclear power plants. No repairs have been conducted at Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant since its occupation.
Since March 2024, Russia has carried out eight missile-drone attacks on the Ukrainian energy system, causing damage to power plants and reducing their production capacity, according to statements from Ukrenergo.
Winter Rehearsal
Officials have referred to the recent period in Ukraine when an extremely hot anticyclone persisted as a “winter rehearsal.” Due to a drastic shortage in electricity generation, most Ukrainians were forced to remain without power for over half a day daily. This led to issues with household appliances and the inability to prepare and store food, among other things.
Citizens are urged to prepare in advance for such conditions, although there is hope that the energy system can be somewhat restored and improved. However, it is important to understand that Russia will not cease attempts to cause a blackout in Ukraine, so neglecting preparation is not advisable.
