The British Army must be ready for a possible conflict within three years, according to a sobering statement made by armed forces commander General Roland Walker. He stated that war is not inevitable, but the army has “sufficient time” to prepare and avoid conflict. Walker emphasized the need to double the army’s combat readiness by 2027 and triple it by the end of the decade.
The key point is understanding that three years is an extremely short deadline for preparing for war. It is crucial to “boost” the following two areas:
- the readiness of military personnel, acquiring modern theoretical knowledge and practical experience that is critically necessary during a war;
- activation of the state’s military-industrial complex, providing the army with the most advanced military equipment, stockpiling ammunition, and so forth.
The commander of the UK armed forces is known for his level-headedness. His statements are always devoid of both undue optimism and pessimism, as he does not “play” to populism. That’s why even authoritative politicians often pay attention to his opinions.
Among the main threats facing the UK in the coming years, General Walker named an “angry” Russia. He believes that regardless of the outcome of the war in Ukraine, Russia may seek revenge against Western countries for their support of Ukraine. “No matter how this ends. I think Russia might come out of this war weaker, objectively or absolutely, but it will still be very dangerous and will seek revenge for our assistance to Ukraine,” Walker stated.
The General also warned of threats from China and Iran. China, he said, aims to establish control over Taiwan, while Iran seeks to develop nuclear weapons.
