On which principles peace should be in Ukraine: proposals from Macron to China (part three)

Various politicians and countries have their own ideas for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine. Some seek to strengthen their international authority, while others aim to impress their audience. Among these plans are proposals from French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former US President Donald Trump, and Chinese diplomats. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to insist on his “peace formula,” although his rhetoric has become less harsh.

Boris Johnson on “peace plan” for Ukraine

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has proposed his “peace plan” for ending the war in Ukraine. According to Johnson, this plan could end the war on favorable terms for Ukraine and the West. He believes that Donald Trump, if elected US president, could implement this plan.

Key points of the plan

  1. Use of weapons:
    • The West allows Ukraine to use ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles, as well as other weapons against airfields in Russian territory.
    • Once the aggressor’s troops are pushed back, Putin may offer a deal.
  2. Russian retreat:
    • Russia retreats to its borders as of February 23, 2022.
    • The territory of Ukraine under Kyiv’s control is recognized as a free country with the prospect of rapid entry into the EU and NATO.
  3. Deployment of troops:
    • After the war ends, some Ukrainian troops will be stationed in European countries.
    • This will allow for the replacement of 70,000 US troops deployed to deter potential Russian aggression.
  4. Economic benefits for the USA:
    • This will allow Trump to save money, bring American troops home, and push Europeans to do more for their own defense, which is one of his key goals.
  5. Russian propaganda:
    • Russia announces that the “Special Military Operation” has completed its task and “denazified” the country.
    • Special protection measures are introduced for the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine.

Possible obstacles

On July 2, Viktor Orban visited Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky. During the meeting, the Prime Minister of Hungary called on Zelensky to cease fire and agree to “peaceful negotiations.” At the same time, Zelensky stated that a very clear plan is needed to stop the fire. In an interview with Bloomberg, he said that discussions can only take place on a clear international platform in the presence of countries whose leaders are trusted.

Zelensky on ceasefire

“Regarding the ceasefire, I clearly explained: we had hundreds of meetings since the Minsk agreements, many years ago the parties agreed to a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, and Russia constantly violated it and killed our people,” – said Zelensky.
