The government has adopted a new resolution that exempts businesses using more than 80% of their own electricity production from power outage schedules. According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, this step will help ensure energy autonomy and resilience for Ukrainian enterprises.
Why is this important?
Shmyhal emphasized that the enemy continues to attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Substations and power lines are being shelled daily. In such conditions, energy workers have to prepare the system for winter, which includes:
- Providing loans to businesses and citizens for alternative energy creation;
- Tariff-free import of energy equipment;
- Simplification of bureaucratic procedures for launching power generation facilities.
What does this mean for businesses?
For enterprises using 80% of their own electricity production, power outage schedules will no longer apply. This incentivizes businesses to create their own energy sources, which is a crucial step towards the country’s energy independence.
Not all citizens support this initiative, rightfully pointing out that it may lead to more frequent power outages at home. However, it should be noted that the most important thing is when a person has a job to go to and receives a salary to support their family. Therefore, the government believes that Ukrainians need to understand and support such business incentives.
Attacks on the energy system and government response
Since the beginning of 2024, Russia has carried out 8 large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, resulting in a loss of 9 GW of power plant generation capacity. This led to extended power outage schedules during the summer. However, in recent weeks, “Ukrenergo” has not imposed restrictions on electricity supply due to cooling weather, and the situation has reached a relative balance.
The government continues to work on strengthening Ukraine’s energy system. Thanks to new measures, companies will have more opportunities to develop their own sources of energy, which will contribute to the stability of energy supply even in the conditions of attacks on infrastructure.
