Ukraine under accusations: Is the Ukrainian side involved in the coup in Mali

Ukraine finds itself at the center of a diplomatic conflict with Mali after accusations emerged of supporting Malian rebels who attacked mercenaries from the Russian “Wagner” group. These accusations, which have already resulted in injuries to several Malian soldiers, have sparked a strong reaction in both countries. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba issued a statement refuting any involvement of Kyiv in the incident and deemed Mali’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Ukraine as hasty and unjustified.

Ukrainian Position

During his address in the Mauritian capital, Port Louis, Dmytro Kuleba clearly stated that Ukraine has never acted against the regular armies of other countries except for Russia. He emphasized that the main goal of Ukraine’s foreign policy is to defend the country from Russian aggression, not to interfere in conflicts of other states, especially African ones. “We are not interested in conflicts with African states. Our goal is to protect Ukraine from Russian aggression,” Kuleba stressed.

The Ukrainian side firmly rejects the accusations of supporting rebels, stating that it is baseless and does not correspond to reality. According to Kuleba, the Malian government’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Ukraine without any concrete evidence is “hasty and unfounded.” He also pointed out that a similar decision was made by the government of Niger, raising suspicions of a coordinated attempt to isolate Ukraine.

International Reaction

This diplomatic scandal has not gone unnoticed on the international stage. Mauritius Foreign Minister Maneesh Gobin expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of the conflict as soon as possible. He underlined that his country’s position is based on the principles of respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states, as well as the inviolability of borders and the prohibition on the use of force, in accordance with the UN Charter.

Gobin noted that any diplomatic conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and cooperation, rather than hasty decisions that could lead to further escalation of tensions.

Wagner Group in Africa: Context and Consequences

The “Wagner” group gained notoriety for its actions in various hotspots, including Africa. The mercenaries of this group actively support pro-Russian forces in different countries, leading to increased tension and concern in the international community. The actions of the “Wagnerites” in Mali have not been an exception, and their presence in the region has already resulted in numerous conflicts and armed clashes.

Accusations against Ukraine of supporting Malian rebels may have far-reaching consequences for Ukrainian diplomacy and international relations in general. It is important to note that such accusations without providing concrete evidence could undermine trust in Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts on the international stage.

Defending National Interests

Ukraine continues to defend its national interests on the international stage, facing numerous challenges and threats. In the situation with Mali, Ukrainian diplomacy demonstrates readiness to defend its position and not allow untrue accusations that could damage the country’s image.

Minister Dmytro Kuleba made it clear that Ukraine has no intention of interfering in the internal conflicts of other states, especially African countries, and will continue to focus its efforts on defending against Russian aggression. Despite difficulties, Ukrainian diplomacy remains firm and resolute, allowing the country to maintain international support and defend its interests on the global stage.
