IAEA rushes to help Ukraine: can the agency make a significant difference?

Therefore, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) has decided not to sit idly by and to actively participate in ensuring safety at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. They now monitor not only nuclear stations, but also infrastructure objects that are crucial for their stability.

Important visit to damaged substation

In particular, IAEA experts have already visited one of the electric substations that was damaged by Russian missile attacks. This substation is important for the safety of the nuclear power plant, and, of course, inspectors have documented all the damage.

Zelensky and Grossi: productive negotiations

This mission became possible after a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. They agreed to closer cooperation, and now this agreement has begun to be implemented in practice.

Why can’t the IAEA force Russia to leave?

Many Ukrainians are outraged why the IAEA cannot force Russia to leave the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. But it is important to understand that this is not within their mandate. The IAEA only monitors, provides recommendations, and shares data with other international organizations. Therefore, despite the feeling that the agency is not acting decisively enough, their work is still crucially important.

Visit to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

By the way, this month Rafael Grossi himself visited Kyiv and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is currently controlled by the Russians. He informed that after regaining control of the plant, some facilities, such as the cooling tower, will have to be demolished as it can no longer be used.

Therefore, although the IAEA does not solve military issues, their work is still critically important for the safety of our energy sector.
