Poland will soon start implementing a large-scale defense project called “Eastern Shield.” This initiative, aimed at protecting Poland’s eastern borders, is designed to strengthen the country’s security against threats from Russia and Belarus. Defense Minister Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysz emphasized that the first fortifications will be laid in the coming days, and the project is no longer just a plan or a theoretical idea.
Purpose of the “Eastern Shield”
The “Eastern Shield” project is developed to protect Polish territories from potential invasions from Russia and Belarus. This defense line will include fortifications, barriers, shelters, and enhanced support for local communities in case of threats. It is important to note that Poland is leveraging Ukrainian experience in combat operations and defense on the territory, creating a defense system that combines modern engineering developments with practical approaches proven in practice.
Procurement of Heavy Equipment for Defense
To implement the “Eastern Shield,” Poland plans to allocate significant funds for the procurement of heavy engineering equipment. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk reported that the Ministry of Defense has allocated up to 600 million zlotys (approximately 140 million dollars) for the purchase of equipment to facilitate the construction and maintenance of defense infrastructure. The investments include the construction of fortified bunkers, distribution lines, and warehouses for storing ammunition and equipment.
Joint Defense Strategy of the Baltic States and Poland
Poland is not the only country in the region concerned about the security of its borders. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are joining forces to develop the so-called “Baltic Defense Line.” Like the “Eastern Shield” in Poland, this project aims to strengthen borders and ensure security against growing threats. In January, the Baltic countries began preparatory stages for constructing their own defense system, and in May, Poland announced the start of work on its project to create a unified defense barrier together with the Baltic countries.
