Recently, Elon Musk’s name has appeared in a completely different context – he is suspected of having ties to the Kremlin. NASA chief Bill Nelson has called for an investigation into possible contacts between the founder of SpaceX and the Russian leader. Nelson, one of the most influential figures in the US space industry, believes that such contacts could pose risks to American security.
Concern among US officials
When asked by CNN whether it is true that Musk and Putin could have had regular conversations, Nelson noted that the situation is quite alarming for many: NASA, the Pentagon, and intelligence services. Contacts with the Russian leadership are always a risk, as data on key American developments, particularly in the space and defense sectors, could be jeopardized.
Uncertainty and caution
Despite the cautious approach of American intelligence, reports of Musk’s ties to Russia have raised concerns. John Kirby, coordinator of strategic communications for the National Security Council, acknowledged hearing about such reports but emphasized that the White House does not have clear evidence to confirm them. The Pentagon also declined to comment on this information.
Musk and his “peaceful plan” for Ukraine
In October 2022, Musk made an unexpected proposal for a “peaceful plan” for Ukraine, which caused a stir: it included referendums in the occupied territories and a renunciation of Crimea. Many viewed this statement as a dangerous signal, especially considering the fact that Musk had previously acknowledged a conversation with Putin, which he had initially denied publicly.
Shadow of Russian oligarchs over Musk’s deals
The situation is further complicated by the fact that investments in Musk’s company also have Russian connections. Documents from a US court revealed that the 8VC fund, linked to the children of Russian oligarchs Petr Aven and Vadim Moshkovich, invested in Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. This raises questions not only about Musk’s financial transparency but also his connections with Russian business elites.
