The question of Ukraine using Western weapons against Russia has once again caught the attention of global media. The French publication Le Figaro reported on the alleged permission from France and the United Kingdom to use SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles for strikes on Russian territory. However, the official authorities of both countries are currently refraining from confirming or refuting this information.
“Master of one’s word”
According to Le Figaro, the decision to allow Ukraine to use SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles was made against the backdrop of a similar move by the USA. President Joe Biden had previously authorized the Ukrainian Armed Forces to use the long-range American missiles ATACMS for strikes on Russian territory. It is reported that these missiles will be used to protect Ukrainian forces in border areas, including in the Kursk region.
However, after the publication of the article in Le Figaro, the text was modified, shifting the focus to the May statement of French President Emmanuel Macron, who expressed support for providing arms to Ukraine during his visit to Germany.
Official Reaction of Paris and London
Despite the sensational information, official representatives of France and the United Kingdom are refraining from commenting. Sky News reports that the British government has confirmed its full support for Ukraine but did not specify details regarding Storm Shadow.
France has also not provided a clear answer on the permission to use its missiles. At the same time, this situation reflects the complexity of the political decision regarding supplying high-tech weapons to a country engaged in a war with a nuclear state.
What Does This Change?
Rockets SCALP/Storm Shadow and ATACMS are high-precision weapons capable of striking targets at long distances. Their use against targets in Russia has significant military and political implications:
- Enhancement of Ukraine’s positions. The use of such weapons allows Ukraine to attack logistic facilities, ammunition depots, and command centers at significant distances.
- Political signal. This is a demonstration of resolute support for Ukraine from the West, but at the same time poses a risk of conflict escalation.
Reaction of Russia
Russia has repeatedly stated that the use of Western weapons on its territory will be considered direct NATO involvement in the war. The Kremlin uses these statements as a pretext to escalate its rhetoric, leveling accusations against the US, France, and the UK.
Uncertainty remains regarding the permission to use SCALP/Storm Shadow. It is apparent that Western countries carefully weigh the risks and benefits of such a decision. It could alter the balance of power on the front but also lead to new escalation threats.
While official statements remain limited, the issue of using Western weapons in Ukraine remains one of the most acute in global politics. Only time will tell whether this decision becomes a new stage in supporting Ukraine or prompts the parties to negotiate.
