Who is the EU chief: does it matter to Ukraine that Poland will chair the EU for six months?

From January 1 to June 30, 2025, Poland officially took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. This important role allows Warsaw to set the priorities of the EU’s work for the next six months. Given the current geopolitical challenges, this presidency promises to be one of the most active in European security issues. This will be a challenging period for Polish politicians, especially considering the announced withdrawal of the United States from European security matters. Will Poland overcome these challenges?

Main Tasks of Poland during the Presidency

Poland has clearly defined the key directions of its work within the EU Council. Among them are:

  • Strengthening European Security: The priority is to enhance the EU’s resilience to external threats, especially in light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
  • Supporting Ukraine: Poland plans to maximize political, military, and economic assistance to Ukraine, as well as work on strengthening sanctions policies against Russia and Belarus.
  • Developing Relations with NATO and the US: The presidency will facilitate deepening cooperation between the EU and NATO, as well as strengthening transatlantic relations.
  • Defense Capabilities: Warsaw aims to help EU member states develop their defense industry, dual-use infrastructure, and strategic readiness. Special attention will be given to the “Eastern Shield” project as a key element of Europe’s defense.

Impact on Ukraine

Poland’s presidency can be a powerful impetus for supporting Ukraine on the international stage. The focus will be on:

  • Enhancing Military Assistance: Poland plans to advocate for increased deliveries of arms and military equipment to Ukraine from EU member states.
  • Political support: The Polish side will promote the acceleration of Ukraine’s European integration processes, especially in the context of meeting the requirements for EU membership.
  • Sanctions policy: Warsaw will insist on maintaining and expanding sanctions against Russia and its allies to hinder the funding of the war.

Will this impact the course of the war?

Poland’s presidency of the EU Council could have significant implications for Ukraine. Due to the historically friendly relations between Kyiv and Warsaw, Ukraine will gain additional leverage in influencing EU decisions. Poland, as one of Ukraine’s key allies, will make efforts to consolidate European states around supporting the Ukrainian people.

At the same time, the significance of this event goes beyond Ukraine itself. Strengthening EU’s defense capabilities and deepening cooperation with NATO and the US enhances the overall security of the region. This could deter Russia from escalating the conflict and contribute to a faster resolution of the war.

A new phase for the EU and Ukraine

Poland’s presidency of the EU Council is an opportunity for the European Union to demonstrate unity and determination in defending its values. For Ukraine, this is a chance to receive even greater support in the fight for freedom and independence.

The next six months could be a turning point for Europe and its ability to face the challenges that lie ahead on the continent. Poland, as an active player on the international stage, has all the chances to become a leader in these changes.
