Despite numerous sanctions and calls to reduce energy dependence on Russia, Europe has once again found itself in the midst of conflicting actions. According to Bloomberg, European countries have set a new record in purchasing Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). This volume exceeds the gas supply previously delivered through pipelines across the territory of Ukraine.
Why is Europe buying Russian LNG?
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Union embarked on a course to reduce its dependence on Russian energy sources. However, a complete rejection of Russian gas proved to be much more difficult than expected.
Bloomberg analysts note that reducing purchases of pipeline gas does not mean a real break in energy ties with Russia. Europe continues to actively buy LNG, citing the need to ensure energy stability.
Cost for Ukraine and Russia
The termination of gas transit through Ukraine is detrimental to both sides, although the scale of losses varies:
- Russia: the Russian economy will only lose 0.2% of GDP due to the halt of pipeline supplies.
- Ukraine: for our country, losses amount to about 0.5% of GDP due to the disappearance of transit fees.
This indicates that Russia has effectively adapted to sanctions pressure, and its income from LNG exports helps to offset the losses.
Europe’s Moral Dilemma
Europe finds itself in a difficult moral dilemma. On one hand, EU countries actively support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, providing financial, military, and humanitarian assistance. On the other hand, a record purchase of LNG effectively undermines this support.
This move is being sharply criticized both by Ukraine and European experts. They emphasize that energy dependence on Russia contradicts the stated goals of the sanctions policy.
For Ukraine, this scenario is a clear signal: relying on its own strengths is necessary, not just on international support. Energy independence becomes not only a strategic goal but also a matter of national security.
Ukraine should continue working on:
– Diversification of energy sources,
– Development of its own energy infrastructure,
– Implementation of alternative and renewable energy sources.
Dubious record
Despite the complexity of the geopolitical situation, Europe’s record purchase of Russian LNG appears as undermining joint efforts in combating the aggressor.
Ukraine and its allies must clearly outline the next steps to prevent the use of energy resources as a tool of pressure. After all, every cubic meter of gas purchased from Russia is financing the war against our state.
The situation with record purchases of Russian LNG once again underscores the weakness of sanctions policy when it comes to energy. Europe will have to find a balance between energy security and ethical obligations. For Ukraine, this is another reason to strengthen its own energy independence and rely primarily on its own resources.
