President of the United States Donald Trump stated that his administration is actively engaged in negotiations with Ukraine, Russia, and other interested parties to seek ways to resolve the conflict. According to him, planned meetings with representatives of both sides are taking place, and discussions are proceeding constructively.
“We have been dealing with Ukraine and Russia, we have talks scheduled with various parties. I think discussions are going well,” Trump told journalists late on the evening of February 2.
What to Expect from the Negotiations?
Trump’s statements align with the warning from the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, Kurt Volker. He noted that for an agreement to be reached, both sides will need to make concessions. The Ukrainian side has indicated its willingness to soften its position on territorial issues, while Russian President Vladimir Putin will also be forced to make compromises.
“We will later have discussions with everyone, and this will be beneficial for both sides,” Kellogg emphasized, adding that negotiations could take place soon.
Position of Ukraine
Despite the statements from the U.S., the Ukrainian government continues to insist on its position regarding the peaceful process. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv’s exclusion from the negotiations would be “very dangerous.” He stressed that for effective security guarantees for Ukraine, an active role of the U.S. in the negotiations is necessary.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that reaching an agreement on the cessation of hostilities will require concessions from both Moscow and Kyiv. However, Zelensky categorically stated that Ukraine would not agree to compromises that would involve recognizing the occupied territories as part of the Russian Federation, even under pressure from allies.
Is a Breakthrough Possible in the Negotiations?
It is difficult to say at the moment whether the negotiations will lead to a real breakthrough in the conflict. While the USA speaks of constructive dialogue, Ukraine’s position remains firm: no compromises on territorial integrity. At the same time, Russia also shows no readiness to make significant concessions.
It is expected that in the coming weeks, a series of important meetings will take place that could determine the future course of events. The situation remains tense, and any decision will require careful analysis and international support.
