Since the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine in 2022, all commercial flights to Ukrainian airspace were suspended. However, the situation may change in the coming years. One of Europe’s largest low-cost carriers, Wizz Air, has officially announced its readiness to resume flights to Ukrainian cities after the war ends.
Wizz Air: 30 routes within six weeks
Wizz Air’s CEO József Váradi stated that the airline is actively planning the resumption of flights. According to him, within six weeks of the airspace reopening, the company will resume about 30 routes. Additionally, in the first six months, Wizz Air plans to relaunch its operations in Kyiv and Lviv.
Wizz Air had a strong presence in the Ukrainian market, offering budget flights to Europe. Therefore, it is logical that the company wants to return immediately after the situation normalizes.
Ryanair also ready to return
Not only Wizz Air sees potential in the Ukrainian market. Another popular European low-cost carrier Ryanair also plans to resume flights after the end of the war. Company representatives stated that they are considering a return to Lviv and Boryspil airports by the end of 2025.
What does the Ukrainian government say?
President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the priority task is the reopening of Ukraine’s main international airport – “Boryspil”. This will allow for the resumption of international transport and economic connections between the country and Europe and the rest of the world.
However, according to Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, for the safe resumption of flights, Ukraine needs to strengthen its air defense system (ADS). Without a reliable protection of its airspace from missile attacks and drones, civilian aviation flights will remain at risk.
When can flights return to Ukraine?
Currently, there are no official dates for the resumption of air travel. The main condition for the return of international airlines remains the end of the war and guaranteed safety of the airspace.
However, optimistic forecasts from experts suggest the possibility of partial resumption of air travel as early as 2025. This will be an important step for the country’s economic recovery, attracting foreign investments, and bringing back Ukrainian citizens who are temporarily abroad.
Conclusion
The return of airlines to Ukraine is only a matter of time. Wizz Air and Ryanair are already planning strategies for opening flights to Ukrainian cities. At the same time, the Ukrainian government is actively working to strengthen the ATS to make flights safe. If these plans materialize, Ukrainians will be able to travel the world again comfortably and without unnecessary restrictions.
