Estonian Minister of Defense Hannes Hanso emphasizes the necessity of European countries’ participation in negotiations for ending the war in Ukraine. He highlights that Europe plays a key role in supporting Ukraine by providing military assistance, imposing sanctions against Russia, and investing in the reconstruction of Ukrainian infrastructure. Therefore, according to Hanso, European states should be direct participants in peace talks to ensure a lasting and just peace.
Dialogue or More?
Hanso also points out that the decision to start negotiations should be made by Ukraine itself. He emphasizes that only the Ukrainian people and their leadership can determine when it’s time for dialogue and under what conditions it should take place. External forces should not dictate to Ukraine when and how negotiations should begin.
Furthermore, the Estonian Minister of Defense underscores the importance of enhancing the defense capabilities of European countries. He calls for increased investments in defense, particularly in air defense systems, to ensure security and readiness for potential threats. Hanso stresses the need for collective responsibility within NATO, where the principle of “One for all, and all for one” should be foundational.
NATO or Not NATO?
He also expresses hope for an open discussion about the future of NATO and the role of Europe in ensuring peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic region. Hanso highlights that over the past 75 years, the Alliance has successfully defended its member countries and maintained peace, and this approach should be preserved going forward.
In this way, Hannes Hanso calls for Europe’s active participation in peaceful negotiations regarding Ukraine, increased defense spending, and strengthening collective security within NATO to ensure a lasting and just peace in the region.
