🔎 Why Is Finland Building a Barrier?
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many European countries began strengthening their borders. In June 2022, the Finnish Ministry of Interior announced plans to build a barrier to ensure the country’s security and counter existing threats.
💰 Funding and Implementation Period
The construction is funded by the Finnish government, and the initial plan aimed to complete the project between 2024 and 2026. Thanks to the accelerated process, the major works will be completed one year ahead of schedule.
🌍 Geopolitical Significance
Finland, which became a NATO member in 2023, is now taking on an important role in strengthening the Alliance’s eastern border. The construction of the barrier may escalate tensions in relations between Finland and Russia and impact European security policy.
