India will be called differently: a return to the name Bharat

The Indian government is interested in restoring the country’s historical name. Such a radical position is connected with the fact that under its current name, it suffered from the colonizer – Great Britain. The desire to remove these reminders of colonial times from the Constitution appeared long ago, but for the first time, India came close to realizing the dream.

The country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the leading activist in this matter who, together with the government, may decide to change the official name to Bharat in September. A special session has been convened regarding it. This session will take place from September 18 to 22.

The changes have already begun

The intentions of Indian politicians are serious. This is indicated by the fact that even the official invitations to the G20 leaders’ summit, which will be held in New Delhi, are signed by “The President of Bharat” and not “The President of India.”

Government officials note that if everything succeeds, it will be necessary first to change the beginning of the Constitution, supplementing it with the following: “Bharat, which was India, will become a Union of States.” Most discussions currently revolve around the phrasing of “the Union of States.”

Renaming is supported by key politicians:

– leaders of “Bharatiya Janata Party”;

– Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma;

– party “Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh”.

Since the name “India” has become one of the main symbols of the era of colonial slavery, the change to “Bharat” is seen as a step towards progress and change for the better.

However, not everyone accepts such a prospect with delight. There are a number of politicians who see no sense in the change but talk about huge sums that will have to be allocated from the state budget for renaming. It is worth noting that there are much fewer opponents than supporters of the initiative. Government officials even urged people to get used to the new name.
