Not the time: why the United States refused to send military personnel to Israel

The authorities of the United States of America are not considering the possibility of sending their military units or a limited peacekeeping contingent to Israel. This was officially announced by White House National Security Advisor John Kirby. According to him, today there are no “objective prerequisites” for this. This position of Washington caused confusion in international politics.

Kirby’s statement came against the backdrop of rhetoric in the US Congress regarding the advisability of stationing American troops on the administrative border of Israel and the Gaza Strip. Moreover, the corresponding opinions of congressmen were divided far from along “party lines.” In particular, the idea of the Democrats to strengthen the Israeli army with instructors from the United States was supported by some Republicans, who recognized that Hamas threatens the stability of the entire Middle East region. At the same time, American President Joseph Biden called on politicians not to rush into making a decision.

And Biden can be understood here. Firstly, earlier the Israeli government made it clear to Washington that the Israelis would appreciate any help from the United States as an ally, but at the current stage of the anti-terrorist operation in Gaza they would prefer support in the form of money, weapons and ammunition. And secondly, now Washington itself does not have additional funds for new military actions in the region.

And yet, Kirby tried, so to speak, to smooth out the rough edges of the problem. “Now we need to concentrate on the post-war reconstruction of Gaza,” he noted. “We are ready to assist Israel in this matter.”

“In other words, the White House has made it clear that now is not the time to send the US military to the Palestinian Authority,” American political commentator William Connolly said in a commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. – The question is whether this time will come at all.”
