Before Ukrainian Embroidered Shirt Day: ‘Fashion Breakthrough’

On May 16, 2024, the final of the annual All-Ukrainian competition of vocational schools of sewing profile “Fashion Breakthrough” organized by the National Sectoral Partnership in the Light Industry of Ukraine “FASHION GLOBUS UKRAINE” and the Association of Sewing Schools of Ukraine will take place in honor of the World Vyshyvanka Day. The theme of this year’s competition is “Ukrainian Embroidery – the nation’s worldview encoded on fabric.” Collections of embroidered clothing created by teams from 53 vocational schools of sewing profile from all regions of Ukraine will be presented. The main message of the project is expressive and inspiring: “Despite the aggressor country’s efforts to destroy the Ukrainian nation and cultural heritage, the Ukrainian people are unbroken and eternal in descendants, culture, language, and heritage.” The ideas and implementation of these collections took place amid the sound of alarms, the hum of generators, the weaving of camouflage nets, and other forms of volunteer assistance, as a significant contribution of the vocational education system to Ukraine’s Victory. Despite all the circumstances of the war, beauty was born by talented hands in all regions – a symbol of professional and technical education in Ukraine, creating a legacy of the unbeaten, whose skill is impressive. In the modern world, where trends and technological advancements in industries change rapidly, embroidery remains an embodiment of time and dedication. It is a symbol of Ukrainian resilience, freedom, and strength of spirit. Organizer of the competition: Golda Vynogradska.

Among the descriptions of collections, the phrase that strikes the most is: “And you sow flowers…even if tomorrow is the end of the world…” says the contest organizer Golda Vinohradska. “This is the sign of the strength of the spirit of our professional-technical education in Ukraine, with which we, as an association of industry employers, have been cooperating for over 7 years.”

These are not just talented products, but also stories of the resilience of educational institutions from all regions of Ukraine, reading which brings tears to the eyes:

  • “Under no circumstances should we give up, we all will get through one more Day at the Borderline of our lives. Quite literally, at the border of physical and mental resources. We will endure, we will prevail!” (Sumy region)
  • “The Ukrainian land weeps and moans, the whole of Ukraine bathes in tears. These feelings were reflected in our collection ‘THE PATH TO VICTORY,’ where dark, black colors are combined as a symbol of pain and sorrow, war and loss, and red, yellow colors as symbols of faith and hope from the flags of the UPA and Ukraine. (Donetsk region)
  • “Our history is a story of how even in difficult times of war and destruction, Ukraine is being restored thanks to the power of human unity and cultural communication. We are grateful to the Republic of Turkey for the assistance in restoring our lyceum and contribution to our future” (Kyiv region).
  • “War is the most terrible thing that could happen to Ukraine. We make a lot of efforts to support our brave soldiers on the front line, as well as their children and internally displaced persons caused by the war. (Volyn, Lviv, Zakarpattia, Khmelnytskyi, Bukovyna).
  • “The Road Home” collection is developed with respect for the culture and heritage of the occupied regions of Ukraine. Every detail reflects a close connection with the lost land, which is tinted with blue and unforgettable memories. The collection unites us in the desire to see the sun of freedom shining across the entire territory of Ukraine” (Chernihiv region, Kharkiv region, Zaporizhzhia).

Looking at the models, it is impossible not to notice how skillfully everyday life and beauty are combined in them, prose of life and poetry of emotions, cheerful notes of celebration mixed with sorrow and grief. All collections are permeated with flowers, giving hope for the future, for the long-awaited victory. Today, the embroidered shirt is a symbol that unites very different Ukrainians by political and religious views, but united in the fight against the enemy.

The contest will be judged by a professional jury, and from May 13-15, embroidery enthusiasts and the public will be able to vote for the collection they liked the most on the project’s website https://fashionglobusukraine.com/konkurs.
