The European Union supports peace negotiations with Russia, but not on the conditions proposed by Vladimir Putin. This statement was made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, while commenting on President Zelensky’s remarks about potential negotiations with Moscow.
Borrell on Possible Peace Talks Between Ukraine and Russia
The chief diplomat highlighted that Zelensky’s willingness “to continue peace negotiations and hold another conference with Russia is genuine.” He noted that during the Peace Summit, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to engaging Russia in the future.
“However, look at what Putin said during Prime Minister Orbán’s visit to Moscow. These are Putin’s preconditions. Certainly, we must be involved in any attempt to achieve peace through diplomatic negotiations and whatever it takes, but not on Putin’s terms,” Borrell emphasized.
The European Union remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine and is committed to ensuring that any peace agreement aligns with international law and respects Ukraine’s sovereignty. The EU continues to call for Russia to withdraw its troops and end its aggression, paving the way for a genuine and lasting peace.
