Today we will talk about why there are still disputes in the United States regarding granting Ukraine permission to strike Russian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to personally discuss this issue with Joe Biden during his visit to Washington, but unfortunately, Biden has repeatedly denied this permission. Why is that and will the situation change this time? Let’s find out.
Why does Ukraine need permission to strike?
Kyiv has long sought from the US the ability to use modern tactical missile systems like ATACMS and other long-range ammunition to target strategic locations in Russian territory. For Ukraine, this is an important part of their victory plan – to strike military targets deep inside Russia that directly impact the course of the war. For example, these could be airfields from which aircraft launch missiles at Ukrainian cities.
However, the Biden administration has not yet given the “green light,” as they fear that such actions could lead to an escalation of the conflict. It is understandable that this position causes disappointment in Ukraine, especially considering that Russia is already receiving weapons from Iran and North Korea.
Ukraine’s “Victory Plan”
During the meeting in Washington, the Ukrainian delegation plans to present their “victory plan,” where one of the important components is the ability to attack Russian military targets on their territory. This could drastically change the balance of power, as strikes on important strategic points, such as airfields, can significantly impede the Russian army.
However, US representatives have their own opinion. They argue that ATACMS supplies are limited, and using such ammunition for strikes on Russia will have a short-term effect. Washington advises focusing on targets in Crimea, where strikes have already forced the Russians to withdraw troops.
European partners show support
Interestingly, while the USA hesitates, Ukraine’s European partners such as the United Kingdom and France have already provided missiles with a longer range and see no issue in using them against Russian targets. They believe that strikes on targets deep within Russia could significantly impact the course of the war by disrupting the enemy’s logistics and destroying important military objects.
Divergence in Washington
In the United States itself, discussions are ongoing on this matter. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin opposes relaxing restrictions on strikes against Russia, fearing potential consequences. At the same time, Secretary of State Antony Blinken is willing to listen to Ukrainian arguments.
The final decision, of course, rests with President Biden. Zelensky intends to strongly advocate for Ukraine’s position, and this will be an important conversation for the future of our war.
Will the Situation Change?
So, the question of strikes on Russia remains open. Biden will have to weigh all the “for” and “against” before making a final decision. With support from Europe, Ukraine hopes that the American side will finally change its position and provide a full range of weapons for victory.
