The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has decided to restrict the use of the messenger Telegram for its employees. This decision was based on a recommendation from the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC). Now, installing and using Telegram on official devices is prohibited.
What led to the restrictions
The Chairman of the Committee on Freedom of Speech, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, explained that such measures are part of recommendations from the National Coordination Center for Cybersecurity. The main goal is to ensure the security of government officials and protect data, as there have been cases where access to information of state employees was obtained through Telegram. One such incident was the fake creation of a channel for the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk.
What security measures are being implemented?
From now on, employees of the Rada must adhere to strict cybersecurity rules. Using Telegram on official devices is prohibited, two-factor authentication has become mandatory, and contact synchronization must be turned off. This will help minimize the risks of data leaks or unauthorized access to third-party accounts.
Blocking the use of Telegram is also ensured by technical and software means, and all attempts at unauthorized connection are recorded.
Why is this important
Telegram has long been a popular messenger for many Ukrainians, but it can also pose a risk for government officials. The anonymity and simplicity of using Telegram make it attractive to those who may spread fake or manipulative information. While its private use is not prohibited, its use at the workplace has become a security threat to the state.
Telegram Channels in Regions: Fake News Danger
It is also worth mentioning the analysis conducted by the Pylyp Orlyk Institute of Democracy, which identified issues with the media in southern Ukraine. According to the research, regional Telegram channels often publish unverified information, leading to fake news and manipulations. This is another example of why it is important to be cautious when using messengers, especially in official work.
The restriction on the use of Telegram in the Verkhovna Rada is just a part of a larger process of strengthening cybersecurity in Ukraine. While private use of the messenger remains allowed, officials will have to adhere to new rules to minimize the risks of information leakage.
