From January 1, 2025, Ukraine will cease the transit of Russian gas through its territory. This statement has become an important strategic signal for global energy and international politics. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal clarified that the possibility of extending the transit exists, but under clearly defined conditions.
Conditions for Extension of Transit
A key requirement for Ukraine is the transfer of rights to Russian gas to European companies. This means that legally, gas must belong to European suppliers at the border between Ukraine and Russia. Therefore, transit through the Ukrainian gas transmission system (GTS) will only be possible upon request from the European Commission.
This requirement excludes the involvement of “Gazprom” in controlling gas supplies through Ukraine, which is an important step in combating Russian energy influence.
