Expecting new wave of refugees after reduction of military support from the USA: how Europe is preparing

The European Union is preparing for a potential new influx of Ukrainian refugees in case of escalation of the war and reduction in military support from the US. German Minister of Interior Affairs Nancy Faeser emphasized the need for a fair distribution of refugees among EU countries in such a scenario.

According to Eurostat data, as of December 2023, over 4.3 million Ukrainians were under temporary protection in European countries, with the highest numbers in Germany, Poland, and Czech Republic.

Austrian Minister of Interior Affairs Gerhard Karner noted that his country has already taken in a significant number of Ukrainians and is currently focused on their integration.

Germany has already started preparing for a potential new influx of refugees, particularly in the federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hamburg, planning to provide more housing for Ukrainians, considering that many of their compatriots already reside there.

EU countries continue to discuss mechanisms for the distribution and integration of Ukrainian refugees to ensure effective support and adaptation in case the situation in Ukraine worsens.
