E-hryvnia already operating in Ukraine: why not talking about it? - Euro-Atlantic Ukraine

E-hryvnia already operating in Ukraine: why not talking about it?

Digital hryvnia is not the future, but a reality that has been functioning in Ukraine for several years. Although its official testing is ongoing, the electronic currency of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) is already being used in state social support programs.

E-hryvnia in action: how does it work?

According to financial expert and chief editor of the “Financial Club” Ruslan Chornyi, e-hryvnia is already actively used through state initiatives. These programs include:

eSupport – payments from the state during the pandemic and to support businesses.
eAssistance – financial support for citizens affected by the war.
eRecovery – aid for the restoration of housing damaged by hostilities.

In these programs, the state monitors the use of funds, determines their intended purpose, and transfers funds directly to citizens’ accounts.

Why is there little discussion about e-hryvnia?

Despite the obvious existence of digital currency, the authorities do not make big announcements about its operation. Why?

🔹 Political factor – due to the war, the NBU and the government do not want to emphasize the implementation of e-hryvnia.
🔹 Technical stage – despite real usage, digital currency still needs refinement.
🔹 International experience – digital currencies exist in many countries, but they do not yet have widespread demand.

Ruslan Chornyi believes that this is not just testing, but the actual implementation of e-hryvnia, it’s just that this topic is not officially disclosed.

Will e-hryvnia become Ukraine’s future?

In the world, central bank digital currencies (CBDC) are a popular but not yet massive trend. China is actively promoting the digital yuan, while the EU is considering launching the digital euro.

For Ukraine, e-hryvnia can become a convenient tool for financial transactions, social benefits, and fighting corruption. But its success depends on citizens’ trust and businesses’ readiness to work with digital money.

Conclusions

🔹 E-hryvnia is already operational through state social assistance programs.
🔹 Ukraine does not advertise its implementation, but it is already functioning in practice.
🔹 Digital currency could become an important financial tool in the future.

The question is when the NBU will officially announce the full launch of e-hryvnia and how much it will be integrated into Ukrainians’ financial life.
