40 presidents and prime ministers of the European Union are to attend the summit of the European political community to be held in Chisinau on June 1, the Newsmaker newspaper reports.
It will be a unique event, if only by the composition of the dignitaries. To date, French and Romanian presidents Emmanuel Macron and Klaus Iohannis, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have already confirmed their presence, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Besides them, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola are expected to come to Moldova.
Event organizers report that the summit will take place on the territory of a wine factory 35 km away from Chisinau. In preparation for the event, police and special forces exercises have already started in the Moldovan capital and will continue until the end of May.
The first summit of the European Political Community took place in Prague on 6-7 October last year.
The European Political Community is an initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron, supported by the EU. By its conception, this platform of cooperation is not an alternative to EU enlargement.
Why Moldova?
Moldova is a small state, where Russian propaganda is still very effective. However, since the unleashed war in Ukraine, a radical change has begun in that country. This includes thanks to President Maia Sandu. European leaders consider her example of a political career a success story in post-Soviet society. Furthermore, Moldova, unlike Ukraine, is easier to help and reform.
As it relates to Ukraine
Ukraine was the only country that put forward proposals for the effective functioning of the organization. One of them was, of course, to establish a peaceful existence on the territory of Europe. It is expected that the heads of European states will discuss the problem of Russian aggression on the territory of the winery, as there is a frozen conflict in Moldova and the territory has been occupied by Russia for 33 years.
