“There are no innocents”: who is behind the new round of the civil war in Sudan

On Tuesday, June 13, it became known about the aggravation of the socio-political crisis in the West African state of Sudan. According to reports coming from this region, after a 24-hour truce, large-scale fighting resumed in the capital of the country, Khartoum, as well as in the vicinity of the second largest and most important Sudanese city of Omdurman. According to independent analysts, a large-scale international conflict may threaten this region and its adjacent countries in the near future. Is it so?

Oddly enough, yes. Strange – because the confrontation in Sudan began more than two months ago with a virtually banal conflict between the troops controlled by the incumbent Sudanese President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the country’s rapid reaction forces (RRF) under the command of General Mohammed Hamdal Dagalo. The military, in the literal sense of the word, did not share powers, after which Dagalo announced his unwillingness to keep the oath and, having created his own “new Sudanese army”, launched an attack on Khartoum. At the moment, it became known that the rebels were joined by armed formations from neighboring countries – Chad, Libya and the Central African Republic. The ceasefire, signed by the parties to the conflict mediated by Saudi Arabia, lasted just over a day.

Now the fighting has again covered almost the entire territory of Sudan. It is reported about the complete evacuation from the Sudanese territory of the diplomatic missions of dozens of states, including the United States. It should be especially noted that against this background, official Washington, which previously supported the “democratic” regime of al-Burkhan, refused to supply Khartoum with money and weapons to counter the rebels mentioned. The Pentagon claims that now the focus of the United States defense department in particular and the White House as a whole is focused on providing military assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, the administration of US President Joseph Biden has already stressed that in the foreseeable future, the Sudanese authorities will be able to “count on the full support of Washington”.

And here it is necessary to make a reservation. In this context, another oddity arises. The thing is that earlier representatives of the same Washington announced their support for the “main rebel” – General Dagalo. According to some reports, the United States planned to carry out an operation to “bloodlessly” overthrow the “democratic regime” of al-Burkhan. However, there is no independent confirmation of this information yet.

“There is a completely justified impression that there are no innocent people in the new round of the civil war in Sudan,” Arab political observer Hassan al-Dhami said in a commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. – One way or another, many states were involved in this conflict. At the same time, there is no guarantee that in the foreseeable future the relevant hostilities will not move beyond the borders of Sudan itself”.

It is difficult to disagree with the last statement.
