“Internal affair”: why the West refused to comment on the attempted military rebellion in Russia

Strange as it may sound, the story of an attempt by representatives of the Russian private military company “Wagner” to establish control over a number of regions of the Russian Federation did not cause a wide response in the media of the European Union and the United States of America. Brussels and Washington abstracted from expressing their own opinion in this connections. Is there a hidden meaning in such a position?

Quite likely there is. Apparently, the EU and the US, which in Russia is usually called the “collective West”, did not aggravate the already tense relations with Moscow. In a special statement by the US State Department, the following was literally noted: “The events taking place in Rostov-on-Don and some other regions of the Russian Federation are an internal affair of the Russian authorities”. Further – more. According to US President Joseph Biden, at the moment, official Washington is closely following the current situation, but “does not want to take one side or another of the conflict”.

Biden was echoed by French President Emmanuel Macron. In his best traditions, the head of the French state said that Paris plans to focus on providing military assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation. “There are no prerequisites for being distracted from this mission of theirs,” – he said, in particular.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen spoke in a similar vein.

“Apparently, Western politicians simply played it safe and did not pay attention to another coup attempt in the Russian Federation, – European political commentator Alexander Mitz emphasized in a commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. – They took a principled, and, as it turned out, correct position, without rely on the moral support of the PMC “Wagner”. Now, in the context of the settlement of the conflict, such a position is optimal”.

How events will develop in the future – time will tell. But one thing is already clear: the West did not support the “Wagnerites”, since separatist sentiments exist in the United States and a number of EU countries.
