A draft resolution has been registered in the Senate, stating that if Russia uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine, it should be treated as an attack on NATO. Senators from both Democrats and Republicans authored the project. Following its registration, a conference was held with media representatives to clarify their position.
What is the point?
If nuclear weapons are used in Ukraine, an absolute disaster will occur. However, the affected area will be not only Ukrainian land but also many other NATO countries, including the members of the Alliance.
The probability of using this type of weapon is currently considered high. The last time such a peak occurred during the Caribbean crisis in 1961 when the USA placed medium-range missiles on the territory of Turkey (a member of NATO). This move prompted the Soviet Union to relocate missiles to Cuba, which in turn heightened the risk of a nuclear conflict on a global scale.
The only way to prevent
A representative of the Republican Party informed reporters that the best way to prevent Russia from using nuclear weapons can be achieved by conveying the message to the Kremlin that the consequences would be highly unfavorable. It is essential for not just the Kremlin leadership but also the military leaders who issue orders to be aware that such actions would result in a war against NATO.
According to experts, if Ukraine’s counterattack is successful, there is a risk of triggering a potential explosion at Europe’s most powerful nuclear power plant.
The resolution registered in the USA is based on Article 5 of the NATO Charter on collective defense. This article applies not only to direct border crossings of NATO member countries but also to any intentional harm caused to its members.
