Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, sappers have been actively working on demining the territory. They have already cleared 875.4 square kilometers of explosive hazards. However, a new task is looming on the horizon \u2013 demining the Black Sea, which is crucial for the safety of navigation and the export of Ukrainian grain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A joint mission of three NATO countries \u2013 Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania \u2013 aims to neutralize drifting mines in certain areas of the Black Sea. This initiative marks the first major joint action of the Black Sea countries since the start of the war. It is aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region, which is particularly important in light of ongoing hostilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania are NATO members, their naval forces are not fully integrated into the Alliance’s overall system. This is partly done to avoid escalating tensions in relations with Russia. However, the cooperation of these countries on demining the Black Sea demonstrates their readiness to ensure security and stability in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global Demining Operation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In April of this year, it was revealed that Ukraine plans to receive at least five mine countermeasure vessels from NATO. This is part of a global operation to demine the waters of the Black and Azov Seas, which could last between three to five years. Simultaneously, demining of sea routes could take between three to five months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This operation is extremely important for Ukraine, as demined sea routes will ensure safe export of Ukrainian grain and other goods. It will also contribute to the country’s economic recovery post-war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The joint Black Sea demining mission carried out by Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania is an important step towards ensuring security and stability in the region.
