Construction works on fortifications covering over 700 km of the border have already begun. This project is a response to increasing threats from the east and aims to enhance national security for Poland and the Baltic countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project &#8220;Eastern Shield&#8221;: Goals and Scope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;Eastern Shield&#8221; project includes the construction of defensive fortifications, alert and detection systems, establishment of advanced bases and logistical nodes, as well as deployment of systems to combat drones. According to plans, the project is scheduled to be completed by 2028, with an estimated cost of 10 billion zlotys (over 2.5 billion US dollars). The initial works have already started near the border with Russia&#8217;s Kaliningrad Oblast, as captured in on-site images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defense against Hybrid Threats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Polish government has decided to take preemptive action by strengthening defenses against so-called &#8220;hybrid threats&#8221; from Russia and Belarus. The border protection project involves countering not only military actions but also hybrid attacks, such as migratory pressure. In 2022, Poland erected a barrier 5.5 m high and 186 km long to halt artificially generated migrant flows from Belarus. These measures were a response to &#8220;migration blackmail,&#8221; through which Belarus and Russia sought to destabilize Poland and neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drawing on Ukrainian Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;Eastern Shield&#8221; project draws heavily on Ukraine&#8217;s experience, as Ukraine has long defended its borders against Russian aggression. Poland&#8217;s temporary envoy to Ukraine, Piotr Lukasevich, noted that the Polish side studied Ukraine&#8217;s defense strategies and adapted them to its conditions. The Ukrainian experience of countering modern challenges like drones and hybrid attacks has been valuable in developing Poland&#8217;s defense program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strategic Importance of the Project for Europe<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The construction of fortifications on the border of Poland with Belarus and Russia has important strategic significance not only for Poland itself, but for the whole of Europe. Poland acts as a barrier on the eastern flank of NATO and the EU, protecting against potential threats that could spread to the rest of European countries. The implementation of the &#8220;Eastern Shield&#8221; will strengthen the alliance&#8217;s position in the region, providing greater resilience and readiness to respond to potential challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;Eastern Shield&#8221; is not just a military project, but a strategic step that will help Poland strengthen its borders and protect the population from potential aggression. The Polish government demonstrates determination in creating a secure space, taking into account the experience of its neighbors and modern defense methods.
